Electrico Moves Forth As Four

After 5 years as a five-piece band, Electrico is now moving forth as a four-piece. Originally known as Electric Company and formed in 1996, the band comprised David Tan (vocals, guitarist), Desmond Goh (bassist) and William Lim, Jr (drummer, backing vocals). Four years later in 2003, the band and its music evolved to include two new talents, Daniel Sassoon (guitarist) and Amanda Ling (keyboards).

On April 7, 2008, after much deliberation, lead guitarist Daniel Sassoon made the difficult decision to leave Electrico to pursue other interests. With his demanding and gruelling career in the legal sector, Daniel had long wanted to take a break from the band to focus his energy on his legal profession. This decision could not have come at a more untimely juncture as the band is embarking on their new album. In spite of his love for the band, Daniel placed the band’s interest foremost and did not want to delay the new album development with his hectic schedule.

As Daniel was already involved in the initial development of Electrico’s new album, this was not a painless decision. His departure from Electrico has without a doubt affected the band but Electrico has only good things to say about Daniel’s stretch as their guitarist. According to frontman David Tan “Daniel is a gifted guitarist who brought a unique dimension to our sound. It’s sad to see him go but I’m sure he’ll do well in whatever he decides to pursue”. As drummer William fondly says “We gonna miss his jumps, moves, spins and amazing fast finger playing guitar techniques.”

Says Leonard Soosay, producer of Electrico’s last 2 albums “Much More Inside” and “Hip City”, “Dan was more than just a member of electrico to me. He still remains as one of my best friends. There were numerous times where I was in dire need of help and he was always there to lend support and give solid advice. His knowledge of music was exemplary and he was always at the forefront of cutting edge new music from around the world. He had one goal and that was to put Singapore music on the world map and he was always in touch with foreign bands and musicians discussing music related topics such as legal issues and copyrights and even dispenses free advice to younger musicians about protecting their songs. Daniel's departure from electrico saddens me but i think he will still be very involved with music and our local music scene.”

Fans need not worry, however, With no plans to replace Daniel any time soon, Electrico is prepared to perform as a quartet with remaining members, drawing inspiration from similarly small bands, such as, Muse, Mute Math, and The Police. The process of adjusting as a four-piece band has amazingly strengthened the bond between band members while materializing new, original and creative music. The change in the dynamics of the band will only serve to expand Electrico’s creativity, and ensure a revolutionary and exciting new sound for the upcoming album to be released in late June. Leonard, who is working on the 3rd album with the band, has this to sum up “ electrico's 3rd album explores a new direction with four very talented musicians. Since Daniel's departure, the band has been rehearsing and writing songs with a different approach, digging deep within themselves to produce an album that is worthy of international standards. Their new songs will pleasantly surprise a lot of their old fans and win over new fans and this may be the best Singapore album to date”
